Training Program

Terrapin is conducting a series of training master classes exploring digital puppetry and performance skills more generally. Terrapin has invited performers and other artists with the intention to develop a core of associated artists that share a range of skills. Training is being conducted by the Artistic Director, Kirsty Grierson and Justus Neuman. These master classes are intensive rather than ongoing.

Complementing the master classes are courses designed to maintain performance fitness and ensemble awareness. These classes and the ongoing training will not only help Terrapin cast for performers with high level skills but they also fit with role that Terrapin plays as a leading arts organisation in the community. The skills learnt by this group will flow back into the community in the upcoming years. It is also the intention that this group will be central to the success of the Articulate program, pitching projects, and also working on them, as the most skilled performers in Tasmania in puppetry and its allied art forms.

The focus of this training program is not solely digital puppetry as it is important to note that digital puppetry refers to the materials of the show not the styles or genre of the new works Terrapin will create. The digital components of the show are purely in the materials used to animate characters and the space. No doubt the material will influence the content of our works, but in no way does digital puppetry lock Terrapin into a dialogue about technology. New works will continue to be influenced by styles and art movement as varying as vaudeville, kinetic sculpture, black light theatre, Bunraku or Wayang Kulit and therefore the training program will reflect this.

The 2009 Training program is supported by Hobart City Council.
